Angelina Jolie: Gradient Mesh
GD214: Computer Illustration | January 26, 2009
This piece was intended to introduce us to and demonstrate the capabilities of the
gradient mesh tool in Adobe Illustrator. My source for this assignment was a
photograph of Angelina Jolie from Google.com.
In the image, Angelina had an intense but serene expression on her face. I had
never used the gradient mesh tool until this assignment, so this composition was
positioned with the face directed at the camera giving me just enough of a challenge.
The composition was created through trial and error, creating a body part such as the
nose, and re-creating it until it was satisfactory in appearance. The most tedious part
was the hair, as each strand was created separately using the pen tool. The final
background is dark gray with a diamond pattern comprising a hairline stroke in a
light cream color to contrast against her fair skin. The subtle background fits with
the elegant look I was trying to achieve.
