PROJECT

Subway is an American  fast food restaurant franchise that primarily sells submarine sandwiches (subs), salads and beverages. It was founded by the 17 year old Fred DeLuca and financed by Peter Buck in 1965 as "Pete's Super Submarines" in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The restaurant renamed to Subway two years later, and a franchise operation began in 1974 with a second restaurant in Wallingford, Connecticut. It has since expanded to become a global franchise.

Subway serves an array of topping choices, allowing the customer to choose which toppings they want on their sandwich. The past Subway slogan, "Eat Fresh", was intended to indicate the fresh ingredients used in their sandwiches.
It is one of the fastest-growing franchises in the world and, as of October 2019, had 41,512 locations in more than 100 countries. More than half its locations (23,928 or 57.6%) are in the United States. It also is the largest single-brand restaurant chain, and the largest restaurant operator, in the world.
This colour combination was, and still is, vastly different from many popular fast food chains, who tend to stick to reds, yellows and oranges. The green is synonymous with freshness and health, while the yellow represents positivity. The arrows, which have remained throughout the entirety of the logo’s evolution, represent the variety of choices the customer has when ordering at Subway.

RESEARCHING competitorS

StaRBUCKS
overview of their instagram
content they post ->

- food & products what they sell
- postive & motivating quotes
- employees
- they show support when something happens in the world
etc.

style of their instagram

what I've noticed about their instagram is

1. nude/neutral colour palette + green (logo colour) = simple and clear aesthetic

2. there is always some strategy when posting - either 3 similar images in a row, or one square with similar content or across (as below)

RESEARCH
learning how to make it look as good as possible
TIPS & TRICKS

- use oil or water to make it look shiny and more tasty

- use sauce as a glue (stick ingredients together)

- use a toothpick to support ingredients (make them straight on the sandwich)

TEST
I am still waiting for the surfaces so I had to improvise (also I used rocket instead of the actual veg I am planning to use)

testing how I am going to shoot macro shot ->
Sandwiches I ordered

My main reason was to see how they look like as I never had Subway plus I wanted branded paper/tissues for my images. I ordered it from Uber Eats and it came in the box which I could possibly use for the shoot.

I ordered Plant Patty
Veggie Delite
& 3 cookies
I decided to look for a similar baguette but that didn't go well (I didn't want to use tiger bread) so I decided to go to Subway and try to ask just for a plain Subway which didn't go well as I expected. The girl serving was a bit confused as her English wasn't good and apparently it was her first day so  she told me she can't do it. I asked her to put only lettuce inside of it and she was fine with it.
personal notes I made for the shoot
- REMINDERS

shooting set up
I had my camera on the tripod while styling and setting up the food so I could see the composition. I used filling light in the left (see below) and in front of me I had 2 large windows which was my main source of the light. I used blinds to create some nice shadows as I wanted to play around with that.
pictures I was happy with
I wasn't happy with my macro shot as the cucumber was really thin and it didn't look how I wanted it so I decided to reshoot that.
I decided to change my veggie because I like the contrast between red and green in my images I shot previously.

STOP MOTION I CREATED FOR MY TIKTOK
TikTok

F  I  N  A  L  S
my main aim was to fade green from the lightest to the darkest and make it interesting on the feed
reason why the video is less than 18 seconds is because I really liked the music and it worked well with my shots
I am really happy how my shoot turned out. It was my first time shooting food in a professional setting. I didnt know what to expect but I did my best to make it look professional. I think the backdrop, sandwich and lighting really worked with the concept and it turned out even better than I was expecting.
I used natural light and one soft box (continuous light) to fill where the natural light wasn't.
My TikTok shows exactly what I wanted - from getting all the ingredients to the final product; you can see how I was making everything, setting up and styling.
I found really helpful researching styling videos and food photography as I have never done it before. TikTok was a good platform to help with some ideas as well. Although I wanted to experiment with my finals a bit more I wasn't able to as the sandwich wasn't stiff enough and everything was falling (couldn't do the levitating ingredients at home).
Overall I am happy how it turned out, the direction I chose and my working progress was pretty smooth as well. I am proud of myself of creating something completely new to me only in 3 weeks.
