TOP IDEAS
- For my first idea I was inspired by Joel Sartore, an American conservation photographer, who mainly photographs animals. I thought this would be a fun concept to follow since I'm stuck at home. Joels photos are usually a close up shot of an animal species with a black background. He does these portraits to highlight animal traits which I decided to follow. I did not go with a black background because I wanted my photos to be brighter and I though having a background that related to my animal would make the composition more complex.
Joel Sartore - Inspired photographer
These were some of the photos I was working with for my inspired triptych. Since I wasn't going to do a black background I wanted to have some of Sartore's influence in my photos. So I wanted to add some of his high contrast, lots of texture, bright colors theme that he has with most of his photos.
My biggest problem with some of my photos was that it was underexposed in some areas and over exposed in others. To fix that I used a mask to lighten up the darker areas without overexposing the brighter areas anymore. My favorite part about editing this composition was editing my cats eyes. I used a mask in just his eyeball and I used this hue tool for the first time to change up the color a little bit which was really cool. I also used the exposure and contrast tool to brighten up the eye which is much darker in the original photo and then used the contrast tool to add some depth. For his fur I followed Joel Sartore's images and really pushed the texture and clarity button to really make the fur stand out since it is just his feet. This was also fun cause I never really use the texture button that much.
For this triptych I was originally going for a much different idea but I combined it with my hands idea and I ended up liking this route so much more. Originally I was going to use one of the shoulder shots to break up the hand pictures but I didn't think it made much sense and decided to drop it.
I found that my photos were kind of flat and didn't have much shadows or like very many highlights which I hated. I wanted to go for a high contrast theme on this one because I thought it would look good on the skin. To start the design process I cropped the photos and left a lot of blank space because I felt that it would emphasize the hands a lot more. To add highlights and shadows, I darkened the shadows and overall photo. I then used the mask tool to add highlights to the hands and darkened any shadows as much as a could without darkening the entire composition too much. I also dropped the saturation a lot because it darkened the photo without actually losing any brightness, I also felt that less colors fit the theme more than high saturation did. I also found the pushing the vibrance helped the skin tone stay bright with the lack of saturation.
Weaknesses:
- My biggest weakness with this project was procrastination. I started this project strong with so many ideas then waited for the last minute to reshoot and and finalize all my ideas. Which was a really bad idea because I didn't want to elevate my project that much because all I wanted to do was get it done.
- Another weakness was that I didn't go as out of the box as I wanted too, I think that just had to do with the fact that it was so late and I didn't have much time to get the stuff I wanted. I also played it a little safe with the editing on Lightroom especially with the cat triptych, I felt like the only catching thing was the texture and the color of the eye.

Strengths
- A strength for this project was the difference of the two triptychs which is pretty great
- Another strength was the cohesiveness of the two triptychs, I like that they all have the same theme and similar composition which really pulls them together.
- I also felt that I experimented with a lot of tools on Lightroom for this project. Even though I didn't use some of the photos I experimented with, I think it is such a plus that I learned about some new tools.
