Bear the Losses (Short Film)

Insight Behind the Film
Bear the Losses was my first attempt at a comedy film. This was also my first time being director with a separate actor as the main protagonist. During the conceptualization for this film, I wanted to have a dynamic, yet peculiar, relationship between two characters. I thought the story called for something more outlandish to really heighten the "comedic" aspect of the film. As a result, rather than having another person for the second character, I decided to cast a talking teddy bear to complete the duo. Their relationship starts off when one proposes an unusual resolution to a situation. The events that unfold twists their relationship for the worst.
The Teddy Bear's Scenes
Filming the teddy bear's scenes was definitely a obstacle to overcome. I had to multi-task: having one hand controlling the teddy bear's movements while getting the shot with the other hand. As a result, a lot of his shots are filmed up close. In wider shots, we had no choice but to have him just sit or lean against the wall. But the voice acting makes up for the lack of movement in those moments.
The Gum
The gum serves a the purpose of bringing events full circle as well as establishing characterization to the main protagonist.
