LUXOR MUSEUM EXTENSION | Display Design, 2003

Summary
Project: The redesign of the new annex of Luxor museum
Client: Supreme Council of Antiquities
Location: Luxor, Egypt
Type: Museum display and extension
Year: 2003
Scope of involvement: Contributed to the design as a junior architect at Shaboury & Associates
Contribution/Responsibilities: Site inspection, architectural drawings, schematic design, design of showcases and circulation, and site visits to check progress of execution (I was involved into the project from inception to completion).
This project aimed to redesign the interiors of a new annex of Luxor Museum which was inaugurated in 1975 at the Corniche of Luxor city (ancient Thebes). The main issue was to reshape the interior space to be more appropriate for the display of the new collection and the design of an appropriate connection between the old museum and the new annex, in addition to the different museums’ technicalities, showcases, lighting, display accessories, etc.
The new exhibition titled “Thebes Glory Military – Technology” had a range of exhibits reflecting the great period of Egyptian military history during the 18th and 19th Dynasties. This museum prides itself on the quality of the pieces it has, the uncluttered way in which they are displayed, and the clear multilingual labeling used. The collection comprises statues of famous pharaohs, articles of war, stele, and most famous of all, the mummies of the two founders of their respective dynasties: Ahmose I and Ramses I.
