When retouching skin, I think keeping it natural and respecting the texture as much as possible is key for a natural/non-plastic looking result. Humans have pores and bumps and wrinkles. It's ok to edit things out if we don't want to keep them in, but skin-smoothing until there's no texture left looks like the work wasn't done with care, in my opinion.
