Repurposed Furniture

Important Notes Regarding Background and Depth of Research of the Project:

There was little to no research to this project as instead of an environmentally minded response I chose to push the brief and create a socially responsive piece of work. I researched materials by visiting reverse garbage, several second hand furniture and antique stores, and dump shops, the combination of places I visited saw me pick some strange materials out of curiosity, things I quite liked just for what they were or their condition and the ideals behind it, they were; a next to new canvas-like lampshade, and a used book titled ‘How to Pray’. Once choosing my materials, I immediately knew what I wanted to do, and how I wanted it to look so began my concept.

Concept Approach and Outcome:

The concept I have chosen reflects a my personal opinions on a topic which means a lot to me, my renunciation of the possibility of a higher power, that particularly of Christian, Judaic and Islamic religions. Though I do not hold grudges, nor do I invoke any hatred towards followers of faith of any kind, I reject the thought of an omniscient, omnipotent being and hate the idea of organised religion. This piece of furniture is reflective of the abandonment of religion in the twenty first century, to rejection of such ridiculous things as ‘how to pray’, as we coast into a world of science and technology which more than disproves the possibility of theism more and more are religious objects are being discarded and found unwanted. The idea of repurposing it into art which also promotes a strong sense of rejection of religion further ads to the irony of the material itself.
