FORM Dustpan Redesign: Jaguar + Moss + Light

FORM: DUSTPAN REDESIGN
JAGUAR + MOSS + LAMP
Three dustpan redesigns with the focus on form. Looking at a personal object, a natural form, and an architectural form as inspiration during my design process.
1. JAGUAR WHISTLE
INSPIRATION OBJECT
The jaguar whistle depicts a ferocious animal that creates a powerful sound. There is a contrast between the aggressive nature of the jaguar and the delicate handmade form of the whistle. The actual object is a souvenir that is meant to be placed as decoration. The jaguar whistle is common to find in Mexico.

My intention was to incorporate all of those formal qualities to create a dustpan that can be a standalone sculpture as well as a functioning object.
OBSERVATION SKETCHES + PRELIMINARY DESIGN SKETCHES
CHIPBOARD PROTOTYPES
Three quick iterations done in chipboard.  Deriving from the silhouette of the jaguar whistle and the protective jarring mouth of the animal. The next step was to create a final refined model.
FINAL MODEL
1. Back view     2. 3/4 view      3. Front view        4. Side view          5. Top view
The back view of the table dustpan is reminiscent of the dramatic perspective of the actual jaguar whistle. The design is geometric and is meant to be on display by your workstation or your home when not in use. It is for tabletops, thus fits for one hand. Dustpans should be elegant and cater to your tastes just as sculptures do.

2. MOSS
INSPIRATION OBJECT
I was walking around my backyard looking for natural forms. I was fascinated by the texture and the joyful characteristics of moss. Close-up one cannot tell that it is moss, it almost looks like some type of fur. Another type of moss looks leaf like. I noticed that moss grows in groups (little huddles) on rocks mostly.
OBSERVATION SKETCHES + PRELIMINARY DESIGN SKETCHES
Thinking about my redesign object, the dustpan, I was sketching traditional dustpans. I needed to think in basic terms instead. What does it mean to collect dust? How does that look like? I started to then think about the air-purifying qualities of moss and how that can be translated as storing away dust. The free-form blob form of moss was used in my dustpan redesign.
FOAM PROTOTYPES
Three quick iterations done in foam. My models had a playful quality to them that I wanted to develop. I started to think about who would want to use this. Perhaps children? It would be interesting to see if this design would encourage children to clean up after themselves. The model is ambiguous, therefore could house toys instead of dust/dirt.

The next step was to create a final refined model.
FINAL MODEL
1. Back view    2. Front view with opening    3. View of the dustpan closed    4. Side view
The storage opening can collect toys or anything small that needs to be collected inside this moss dustpan. It enables the user to hide their belongings to keep a tidy area.

The dustpan is to be used in a corner of a room (a child‘s room perhaps). It not only collects the dust from sweeping but also stores it away like a trash can. It can be cleaned afterward by removing the container inside.
3. LIGHT BOX
INSPIRATION OBJECT
This particular lamp is protective over the light bulb. It has a cage-like form. The lamp is ornate. There is an acorn at the bottom, the hoop top, the fleur-de-lis, and the wavy crosses on the exterior of the lamp. I took inspiration from the box form and protectiveness. My intention was to create a dustpan that prevents dust from falling out after sweeping.

CHIPBOARD PROTOTYPES
Three quick iterations done in chipboard. After making these I wanted to add a pivoting motion rather than attaching some sort of door/gate. The next step was to create a final refined model.
FINAL MODEL
1. 3/4 view (a)    2. Front view     3. 3/4 view (b)     4. Dynamic view (tilted)
The dustpan tilts to protect the floor from the dust after sweeping. There would be a rivet in place for motion. The hoop handle takes formal qualities of the inspiration object.

The scale of this would work best as a floor dustpan. Meant for more heavy-duty cleaning.
