Established in 1904, Big Brothers Big Sisters is the largest mentoring network in America supported by volunteers. The organization works to connect adult volunteers with youth to promote a positive impact on the lives of each other. Youth in the program experience several benefits from spending time with their mentors, according to a research study conducted by Public/Private Ventures and published in 1995. The mentors get the gratification of acting in service.

The research study followed more than 950 youth in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Program over 18 months and found that they were 46 percent less likely to be involved in drug use, 27 percent less likely to start consuming alcohol, and 52 percent less likely to fail to attend school. Participants also showed improved confidence levels and better relationships with their families.
