“Light Experimentation” (2019)

LIGHT EXPERIMENTATION
2019

This series consist of sculptures made from when I was experimenting with light and illumination. I was always drawn to art in which light was the medium, and wanted to try my hand in it.
“Realm” 2019
4 in x 6 in
(Wood, Polarizing Filter)

Wanting to experiment with light, I took on the challenge of working with polarizing filters within sculptures. The goal was to create something that would provide a sense of illumination without actually requiring a power source. Using an oblong-shaped piece of wood with a hole drilled through it, the edges were then sanded down to give an appearance of organic shaping over time. Polarizing film was then cut and adhered to the backside of the wood. When photographed, the film gives off different appearances depending on how the sculpture is positioned.

“Untitled” 2019
5 in x 48 in
(Driftwood, silicone, wires, , LED lights, alkaline batteries)

This is an untitled piece that was another experiment with light. I took a piece of driftwood and mapped out the spots I wanted mushrooms in, then drilled holes to make room for the wiring to go through and connect to a power source on the backside. After the wiring was set up, I moved on to making the mushrooms. LED lights were soldered to wires and twisted to create an armature for the stems of each mushroom. After sculpting silicone around the stems they were set to cure while the mushroom heads were made separately and attached later. After everything was cured and assembled, they were connected to their appropriate feeds and then adhered and touched up to create a natural appearance of them growing out of the driftwood.
“Poison” 2019
6 in x 30 in
(PVC pipe, paint, LED lights)

“Poison” is a sculpture which actually ended up being used in another piece titled “Big Tobacco”. A two and a half foot PVC pipe was sanded down, then painted to resemble a burning cigarette. Red LED lights were fed through the hollow portion and fitted into holes drilled at the very top. When lit, the LED lights fade in and out to simulate a burning ember.
