Sophomore year "Form Assignment" 2021

"This project is about form – how we can use form to project an emotion, indicate status, reference historical movements and biological organisms, be ironic or humorous – all creating a layer of formal function above and beyond an object’s strict utilitarian function."
Porcelain brooch, from the RISD museum/                  the chosen word: Tart/                  Human skull, from the RISD Nature Lab
Inspiration: Pick three form inspirations – one from the Nature Lab, one from the RISD Museum and one from the assigned word list.
First was analyzing the objects and the chosen word. Spending at least a half hour with each, analyzing them through sketching to understand their form and meaning is essential. For my word, I noted down any formal associations. For the objects, I noted the components, moving parts, materials, textures and characteristics.
Next was designing three new objects that are functionally the same but are each taking formal references from one of my three original form inspirations. I picked an object from the list that the prof. supplied. My object being a glasses case, I stuck to a somewhat oblong shape, in order to fit a pair of glasses.
First the brooch
Second the word Tart
Lastly the Skull
Then I went forward and made 3 models from some of the most interesting forms
From those above models I chose three of the most interesting forms to refine make models of
A felt model inspired by the curvilinear decoration on the brooch
A foam model inspired by the sharp taste of something that is tart
And finally a paper model loosely inspired by the jawline of the human skull
