Student Apartment

For this design project, I was given the prompt to create a student apartment commissioned by the regents of University of California. The apartments needed to be standard size (600 sq. ft, +/- 10%) and have an incorporated standardized bathroom/kitchen core unit or similar compact layout. The last constraint was to design for a general student population since the apartments will have new occupants each school year. To solve this design challenge, I decided to design for a UCLA theater major because I was inspired by the kind of space such a multi-talented and creative student might need.
My cover page expands on how I planned to design an apartment based on the needs of a theater major. After my bubble diagram, I used Morpholio Trace to begin blocking out and deciding my layout. My main focus with these first sketches was figuring out how to get the proper square footage while having the spaces and layout I envisioned. I then moved on to AutoCAD to draft my floor plan further.
The major change that occurred in my floor plan was the orientation of the windows and balcony due to standard apartment sizing. The process of drafting my floor plan was also a process of learning AutoCAD as you can see how the colors of the lines changed to be not only more organized, but correlate to line weights so the print version of my design would be visually correct. From there, I used my floor plan to create a reflected ceiling plan, two interior elevations, a one-point perspective, and a two-point perspective. This was the final result of my work:
