In this video, I explore the relationship between the natural world and artwork by highlighting abstract paintings made from soil samples, and by showing the process of manufacturing paint using raw pigment. I believe that working directly with pigment gives the artist an unparalleled view into the working properties of each type of pigment, but more importantly, the process grounds the artist in the natural world. Working with pigment reminds one that all of the art and artifice in our lives can be traced back to the raw elements of the Earth. I convey this earthiness in my own work.
