Mother Nature
“Mother Nature” celebrates my personal connection I feel with the Earth and the many ancient and continuing traditions that revere female spiritual incarnations of the Earth, such as the Greek deity Gaia, Unfortunately our society values neither women nor nature, and the environment became something to be exploited, transformed, and used for profit. Both women and nature are expected to be perpetually available to the white man, and to be accepting and accommodating of his desires.
My body, my choice
Staircase to nowhere
"Staircase to nowhere" was inspired by the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami. In the lobby there’s a ballroom staircase leading only to a small coat room, that the architect dubbed “staircase to nowhere”. Back in the days, you could see ladies walking down the stairs and showing off their expensive clothes. I find this very ironic and I a metaphor for life, the status of women in the society, and the lies that they are told. How many times have you climbed shiny grand stairs that led you to a wall? The woman is wearing a wedding dress, which is a criticism of the institutional marriage and the fake sense of achievement it promises.
Anxiety
“Anxiety” is a depiction of the way the COVID pandemic is affecting women and setting back gains in equality. Although the outbreak has many of us living in isolation, forcing us to cope with our fears and anxieties while being trapped at home, women are the most affected. We are the ones carrying the care burden, with lost employment and education opportunities.
Eat the patriarchy
Liberty leading the women
“Liberty guiding the women” is about breaking down period taboos, the stigma and awkwardness around it. Without open conversations and real understanding, we can't address issues such as period poverty. The lack of access to period products negatively impacts women’s development, health, and economic opportunities, reinforcing social inequalities. We can't talk about fairness and equality until period is normalized, until the physical functions of our bodies stop being associated with shame. And we can't tackle poverty without discussing the extra penalty women pay.
International Women's Day
Our sociocultural environment sexually objectifies the female body and equates a woman’s worth with her body’s appearance and sexual functions. A society that forces women to become explicit targets of objectification and that rewards them for treating themselves as sexual objects is oppressive and should not be tolerated. Our place in the world is not to be an object or decoration for men to admire.
Birth of Venuses
Snakes and Ladders
Life is a game of Snakes and Ladders. Like the little girl climbing the ladder, we naively assume that we’re all playing the same game and opportunities come to those who continue to roll, no matter what. But women inherently face systemic hindrances. The snake stands for the overlapping oppressions and consequent disadvantage faced by women. At the same time, although the ladder represents the opportunities that get us advancing in life, it is riddled with challenges, such as sexism and educational inequalities.
In your Image
I made this poster design for Cheap Festival but it wasn’t selected. The theme for the call was “post-“ and it prompted us to imagine the future, what awaits us beyond capitalism, after the downfall of patriarchy. I imagined a post-vitruvian society, that isn’t built in the image of the white man. If white heterosexual able bodied men are offered as the image of perfection, anything that doesn’t fall into this category is automatically considered imperfect. It’s time to drop the prejudiced myth of the universality of the body and to build a society that takes into consideration idiosyncrasies and human diversity. We need a new language and new symbols in order to build a different future.
