Public space is known as a place that unites various functions, from social, economic to environmental.
However, the pandemic situation makes it’s the most avoided place because they have the potential to spread the virus even worse. So, is it possible for the existing public space to function again?

In order to maintain the existence of public space, re-design action is required.

What if people still can enjoy public space even during a pandemic situation?
How to create a visionary space but answer the current problems at the same time?

After finding purposes, we identified that Bandung City Square is the right choice to re-design, because:
Many people come to this place, both from Bandung and outside Bandung. Its location is in the middle of Bandung City, located in front of the Grand Mosque. This place is also an economic center. Then we discovered that this place is still a tourist magnet in the midst of a pandemic.

The concept of this design comes from objects that can relate to the above aspects, namely water.  Water as an element that describes cleanliness, fertility, and purity is depicted by the form of water ripples that are scattered all over the site, as well as the presence of a retention lake. Each shape of the water ripples will represent a function, namely the occupant's function area, children's play area, gallery area, picnic area, and monument area. The idea is because Bandung itself used to be a lake, and the water itself can answer some of the problems that exist on the site.

The monument as the centerpiece of the site as well as the rainwater-harvesting pond is the main element of this public space, which helps increase the attractiveness of the environment. It is the most important element because; in addition to support the economic life of the site as a tourist area, it also acts as a water reservoir that will be distributed for the needs of the site and its surroundings. The monument can also be enjoyed by visitors who are cycling or jogging through the ramp above the monument.

In public space, the division of space is carried out based on the issue of the concept that raised; health, social, economy and environment. This is done to differentiate activities from each facility category and minimize the tendency of visitors to gather in one place. This effort was also carried out by creating entrance points that spread out on each side, while at the same time making public space feel more welcoming to visitors.

The shape of the site is inspired by a water splash that spreads according to the function of the site which seeks to meet the water needs of the environment. The organic shape is made to maximize the visitor experience feeling the whole site.

The existence of a mosque on the side of the public space provides a strong axis so that it forms a straight line dividing its organic shape. The straight line is the axis of the mosque because the square has a strong connection with the Grand Mosque. The radial pattern allows visitors to enter from all directions to minimize the possibility of overcrowding visitors in one place. The provision of altitude differences maximizes green land and minimizing close human interactions.

The Public Space’s main entrance invites visitors with a wide staircase, as well as direct views into the monument and site. The broad ladder can be used as a visitor's sitting area, providing views of vehicles passing by on the highway. Each entrance to the site has a sanitary area in the form of a water railing which encourages visitors to 'wash their hands' when entering and leaving the site.

The gallery and children's play area are devoted to educating families as visitors to the site. This area is a place for providing information about health. It also serves as a sitting area for parents who are waiting for their children to play. In the children's play area, games are made that hone children's motor skills, without the need for physical touch from their friends, and minimize physical contact between children and playing equipment.

Social activities are the most avoided activities during this pandemic. So to overcome this, this area was created with due observance of comprehensive health protocols. Activities are separated vertically to reduce the use of green land and to minimize physical contact between visitors.

Tenant area is manifested by the creation of an open area for the local seller as well as a sitting area for visitors. Apart from the trading activity, this area can also be used as an open courtyard if needed.

The purpose of the green space is a public area that prioritizes environmental issues. This is done by providing a large area of green land, which can be used as a seating area for visitors. Most areas in these public spaces are made open to reduce the potential for disease transmission and providing sun for the visitors.
