Character design & stop motion animation

During my final year of study, our photography and videography project fell at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdowns. As a result, it was almost impossible to leave the house and capture relevant material. My yearlong campaign focused on promoting craft and sustainability, particularly in the fashion industry, in opposition to the overconsumption encouraged by fast-fashion.
I used found imagery from fashion magazines, and juxtaposed it with photojournalism covering the impacts of the fast fashion industry.
In doing so, I wanted to point out the disparity between the two narratives and attempt to intervene in the glamorous depiction of consumerism.

As I did not have access to animating software during the lockdown, I used stop-motion animation to bring my collage characters to life. As a result, the movements are rough and uneven, which I feel adds a surreal element to the work. The short video depicts a dystopian mall setting and is a lighthearted critique of our over-consumption.
