Upcycling and sustainable fashion

All of the following work presented in this portfolio is what I have done in my free time as I did not take a creative course at A-Level. However from taking Art at GCSE I have furthered my skills and spent a lot of time doing research into work relevant to this course as I am determined to pursue a course that I see as my future.

To start off I set myself a task on looking into up cycling and fast fashion.

Upcycling fashion is extremely popular especially at the moment on platforms such as Depop and Instagram businesses where damaged or unwanted clothing from designer brands are being processed to make one of a kind pieces. I chose to look into this topic as I am extremely interested in it. I tend to mainly shop on depop rather than using fast fashion and have got a variety of garments from sellers that have used this method. Upcycling shows creativity whilst benefiting the environment by recycling and reusing where the end pieces are of even better quality than before. Due to the freedom that people have with it, great profits can be made due to them being one of a kind garments.

Here is some photos I have taken of garments that have been upcycled and I have purchased of Depop:

The founder of up cycling fashion was Julia Grieve. In 1995 she founded Preloved ,which is her eco friendly clothing and housewares design company. She explains how they take vintage clothing and completely deconstruct it, turning it into fabric to then use of a new piece. New collections are introduced each season and over the past 18 years they’ve expanded from creating contemporary womenswear to now catering for men, children and home decor.
