Creating a 400m Morse code installation for Santander

BY KYLE WILKINSON STUDIO

Unity Place is the new tech hub and home for Santander in Milton Keynes, which is currently under construction.

The bank asked us to deliver a design that sparked a conversation, whilst having an element of intrigue, as well as gamification.

The area of MK has a rich history of technology, particularly at Bletchley Park - the home of the codebreakers of WW2, who used some of the first computers to intercept and crack codes, led by the iconic Alan Turing.

To give a nod to this history of tech and let the public try their hand at cracking codes themselves, we delivered a design that included hidden words within Morse code patterns that runs through prominent locations along the perimeter, with the Morse code alphabet printed opposite.

The patterns were created from 4 different words, Explore, Sustainable, Adventure and Possibility - everything the new building wants to encourage and represent. It frames the construction site in both a public art piece, as well as a challenging code cracking opportunity, that people of all ages could enjoy.
