The Harriet Bouslog Labor Scholarship was established by Harriet Bouslog and her husband, Stephen T. Sawyer, in 1989 to benefit the children and grandchildren of ILWU members. Harriet Bouslog dedicated her life to defending the ILWU and its members, working as the union’s first General Counsel from 1946 to 1978. She continued to support the working people of Hawaii until her passing in 1998.
 

The Bouslog Scholarship was established to demonstrate this support as well as to commemorate the historic achievements of the ILWU and encourage greater awareness and understanding among young people about the ILWU’s economic, social and political contributions to Hawaii. Scholarships are awarded each year to Hawaii high school seniors to attend the University of Hawaii campuses.

Harriet Bouslog Labor Scholarship Fund wanted to:

-   Create an online presence, a repository for all things Harriet Bouslog with a scholarship component
-   Increase visibility of the Harriet Bouslog Labor Scholarship Fund
-   Create a platform for students to submit their video applications
-   Archive project to include digitizing hundreds of clippings, restoration of old photos

The challenge of this project was to create a contemporary picture of the Harriet Bouslog Labor Scholarship Fund, while featuring Harriet Bouslog’s legacy of leadership and her relationship with ILWU Local 142. HBLSF has just secured the rights to PBS Hawaii’s biography of Harriet and we’ll be sharing on the site very soon. It was an honor to work on this treasure of a project.
