Marvel House:
Building foundations to transition women into a new life
Brighton, MA
This thesisproject is a women’s transitional house, The Marvel House, located in the Brighton, MA for ages 17-22. By definition a transitional home must provide an alternativeto involving Runaway Homeless Youths in the law enforcement, child welfare, mental health, and juvenile justice systems. Each Transitional Living Programmust provide a safe and appropriate shelter for up to 18 months of serviceswith adult supervision, life and interpersonal skill building, careercounseling and job skills, counseling, and medical care as appropriate.
This transitional house will incorporate career building for women who are struggling to find theirplace in society, needing a job or a permanent living situation. This home willbe a place where women can pay a low weekly rate, for food, shelter, counseling, tutoring, support, and advising. It will be a home where women whoneed some help getting a career will be taught the skills they need to be selfsufficient, and become a citizen of good standing. There will be a timecommitment of 8 to 10 months, which is just enough time to get set up for asuccessful career and future.
This thesis project is mixed use occupancy, institutional and residential. Thetopic of focus will be on the effects of the environment on mood anddepression, looking into how colors, materials, lighting, indoor verses outdoorspace, and size of private verses public space, affects a person.
Currently in the city of Bostonthere is no transitional housing of this sort, particularly for women. There are several sober houses in Brighton, yet no where for these women to go once they’vecompleted the sober house if they have not set up a job or a home. Saint Elizabeth’s hospital abutsthe Saint Gabriel’sproperty and could be of much more service to the area if it were tocollaborate with a program such as this, providing councilors for the supportgroups, and internships, as well as free healthcare for its occupants.  Unemployment in the city of Boston is a major problem, and starting acareer house, such as this would be a great way to help fill the unemploymentgap.
