Mount Everest is famously the tallest mountain in the world, straddling China and Nepal in the Himalayan Mountain Range. The mountain is between 50 and 60 million years old and formed as a result of the collision between the Indian and Eurasian Tectonic Plates. Until recently, the mountain’s official height was 8,848 meters (approximately 29,029 feet), which was determined by the Survey of India in 1954.

However, in December 2020, Nepal made their first-ever assessment of the mountain’s height. To calculate the height, they used the Bay of Bengal as its sea level and a network of line-of-sight stations. They also needed to ascend to the top of the mountain to make final calculations. After training for 2 years, four Nepalese land surveyors headed to the summit. They placed a beacon at the summit, which surveyors at stations around the summit used to measure the distance. They also used Global Navigation Satellite Systems to receive elevation data.

After all this effort, Nepal announced that the mountain had grown by 0.86 meters (almost 3 feet) and the new height was now estimated to be 8,848.86 meters (about 29,032 feet). Chinese surveyors agreed with this updated number, and it is now the official height of Everest.

So as we can note, even the tallest mountain in the world found room to grow in 2020.
