Monochromatic Illustration
This project is a monochromatic illustration of Lassen Volcanic National Park. It uses an orange tonal family with colors from a lighter orange to a dark brown to show depth and texture within the image.

This poster started as a sketch of one of the classic viewpoints at Lassen Volcanic National Park looking over the water through the trees and toward the towering volcanic mountain in the distance. The orange tonal family was chosen because of the feel the volcanic mountain gets when it is showered in sunlight.

There are a wealth of design decisions in this image. The trees were shaped using image-trace of a real pine tree and shaded from darkest to lightest as they approached the base of the mountain. The inner glow of the "water" helps divide the waterline from the land and gives it a reflective quality. The warp tool was used to add a ripple effect to the reflections in the water, giving the piece movement and realism. Texture was added to the mountain tops by adding abstract shapes to show creases and craters in the mountain's faces.

The final illustration is a completed monochromatic view of Lassen Volcanic National Park that brings about the joy and comforts of nature in a vibrant orange tonal family.
