The following collection of patterns for jacquard were made during our course 'Jacquard Design'. The course was conducted under the guidance of Mr. Sakthi Vel, Mr. Shafique Afzal and visiting faculty Mr. Ujjal Bhuyan. During the course I learnt about history of jacquard weaving, jacquard mechanism, developing designs for a jacquard, market trends and plotting our own graphs for jacquard weaving.

The inspiration for my collection was Mughal miniature paintings. The collection covers a range of patterns such as botanicals, stripes, textures and other complex surfaces.

The next step was to choose a couple of designs from the collection and plot them on graphs. This required learning and understanding various aspects of graph making such as transferring design onto the graphs, stepping it and then plotting weave structures. After working on the treatment of the designs it needs to be translated in terms of woven structures. This also means being aware of the scope of various weaves, for example, the structural flexibility of a double cloth allows immense scope of gradations, color interactions and interesting patterns using only two colors. For better understanding I first looked at a few examples from the college’s archives for reference and then began making my own design.
