Being a performer and object manipulator (juggler) has given me a particular perspective on the objects that are put on stage. There is an almost inherent focus on functionality and transformation. This, quite naturally, led me to imagine the costume as a prop or tool, leaving behind its traditionally passive role and elevating it to a more alive protagonist of a performance.

By its movements alone this garment can tell stories, express feelings and paint moods. While changing its shape we can see many of its faces, it’s almost never the same. And if we wait patiently we can observe more and more of its layers. Because of these aspects, for me, this costume provides an allegory of human qualities: It represents the complexity behind apparent simplicity, the possibility of change, and the ability to surprise. It is like the experience of getting to know another person, or even yourself: At first you see only the simple, black surface but in time you discover unforeseen depth and hidden complexity. It only seemed tting to call the garment HIDDEN LAYERS.
On a metaphysical level it tells the story of my journey of self exploration: While I was slowly discovering the possibilities and abilities of the costume, I in turn became aware of my own potential to create things with my two hands and develop myself. In a way it was a long therapy session to understand and accept my inner self.
