PLAYING CARDS

Illustrated conceptual playing cards.

The brief for this project required a focus on the history of playing cards.
Inspiration for this design is derived from the research on early playing card
culture from Germany and France. In French culture, the biblical character
Judith is referred to as the “Queen of the desert”. She
is beloved and praised
in various stories so this was a suitable figure for the “Queen of Hearts”.

The design style of these cards takes inspiration from the stained-glass windows
found in catholic churches and cathedrals in France. The back of the card
shows the star constellation ‘Sirius’ which is seen clearly over the Syrian night
skies where Judith had her adventures.
