CRAFT: IKAT of Vellanky, Telangana
Introduction:
• NIFT with the active support from the Ministry of Textiles has developed and implemented a Craft Cluster Initiative Program
which aims to provide the students with continuous exposure to the handloom and handicraft clusters, thus providing an
opportunity for creative innovation and experimentation.

Pochampally Ikat - the most typical weaving village in Nalgonda and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri District of Telangana.
• Today, there are more than 10000 weaving families in 100 villages.

• Vellanky Ikat, the uniqueness of which lies in the zigzag feathered design of the weave, is practiced in the village - Vellanky.
The craft is traditional and has been practiced from ages for making a variety of products like bed sheets, dress materials,
bags, etc. To suit the change of time, the artisans have begun adopting sustainable ways by making functional products.
This cluster initiative helped in learning the characteristics and techniques used by artisans and adapting to designs and
techniques that satisfy today’s market demand.
