Echoes in Conversation

AFTER TIME.

This piece is an attempt in creating conversation with the context and concept of the work by Walter Oltmann titled “Cradle”. My particular prints lean toward portraying my own personal experience with reference to his heavy concepts in a very simplistic way.
It looks towards Oltmann’s work of “Cradle”, which places emphasis on the skulls of predominantly children and those in their teenage years. His intention through this subject matter is to remind the viewers of the fragility of life. The use of these fetal-like subjects are often used to evoke the concept of life, in this case, death. He suggests death as a form of sleep.
In creating dialogue with the work of Oltmann, I chose to share an experience I have faced in such a way that does not literally showcase the occurring event. My Great-Grandad had passed away this year which is why I was drawn to the work of Oltmann. It was after his passing that I stepped back, slowed down and actually began to think about the fragility of life. Life is a gamble, you don’t know what your next "roll" entails. I believe that there is something much greater beyond death. I chose a specific number to show on the dice, “3”. I wanted to show the feeling of emptiness I had experienced.
