DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS LOGO
SOUTH KOREA - PORTUGAL

The Korean Embassy in Portugal made a challenge to all the people who wanted to create a new logo for the celebration of the 60 years of diplomatic relations between Portugal and South Korea. Even though I didn't win, here it's my design.
   A BIG STORY BEHIND IT...
The Portuguese and Korean people met for the first time in the XVII century, and friendship has been a trademark
of their relations since  the jesuit priest João Rodrigues met a king envoy in 1631. Diplomatic relations where established between the two countries in the 16th of April 1961.
It was with this history in mind that I develop this logo, with the purpose of capturing with simple and straight lines defining symbols of both countries that could be identified with the roots of this relationship.
The Base lines of the logo represent the Yin-Yang symbol that is depicted in the South Korea flag (태극기) with the propose of setting a space frame. In the blue element of this symbol “태극기” ( taegeukki), was introduced a trigram that is also present in the flag the “감” (gam), this trigram is used as a remainder of the medium that united the two nations, the water, and therefor its design suggests the waves of the sea. In the upper red area of the taegeukki, the curve was used to place the characteristic lateen sail of the Portuguese Caravels where the Cross of Christ is shown as it was in the original sails and as is still used by the Portuguese ships.
The concept in this logo, intends to capture the the birth of the relationship between the two countries identified using defining elements of both identities and creating the feeling of harmony and dynamic representing the diplomatic relations.
