Pompeii  (40°44'54.4"N 14°29'47.6"E)
As the light vessel approached the shore near Herculaneum, cinders and pumice began to fall on it. Pliny's helmsman advised turning back, to which Pliny replied, "Fortune favours the brave; steer to where Pomponianus is."
By the end of 25 august, the landscape around mount vesuvius had been changed forever, the river and the port were gone, Pompeii had been completely buried. Within a few years no one could remember where the city had once stood.
