Fly Fishing at Rocky Mountain National Park

An experienced professional with a diverse career history, Dr. Lawrence Hernandez holds a PhD in child and adolescent development from Stanford University. When not managing his college admissions coaching organization Admissions Geek, Dr. Lawrence Hernandez enjoys fly fishing at Rocky Mountain National Park.

Located in Colorado, Rocky Mountain National Park provides plenty of fishing opportunities for visitors, from release fly fishing and high country catch to ice fishing in wintertime and big lake fishing. Anglers 16 years and older will need to obtain a Colorado fishing license, except during the first weekend in June every year.

Since Rocky Mountain National Park is a protected area, there is also a possession limit of 18 fish per day with a specific maximum number per species when fly fishing. At least four trout species currently populate the park - greenback cutthroat, rainbow, brown, and brook. Open lakes known to contain fish include Rock Lake, Lake Haiyaha, Peacock Pool, and Sky Pond, and there may also be some suckers in the lakes and streams.

Anglers may also choose catch-and-release areas, which are Rocky Mountain National Park waters with restored native fish populations. At catch-and-release sites, only barbless hooks can be used, and no bait is permitted.
