Natural Treasures Beneath the Ocean Waves
My sculptural ceramic artworks depict different representations of found objects, washed ashore on several beaches of Port Elizabeth. Unfortunately as we all know already, marine life (specifically referring to coral reefs), face unstoppable, relentless endangerment as a result of the Anthropocene era. Rather, through careful examination of each found artefact I am inspired to appreciate their existence and to consider their significance in the ecosystem.

The suspension of the ceramic artworks represents that these invertebrates are hanging on a lifeline and  it also serves as an illusion as if they are floating in water. So my aim is not only to raise awareness regarding the risks they are facing, but by mimicking these natural creatures in clay, I am able to emphasize their fragile and delicate nature.

A particular verse in the Bible (Genesis 1: 28) describes the role of humanity in the natural realm as “having authority over all the living things” which have been misinterpreted throughout history as “taking advantage of” or “to exploit” every living thing on our planet. However, through my artworks, my aim is to change this perspective to “manage or govern the environment sustainably”. It is important to not be oblivious to the problems our planet is facing but to realize that our role is to appreciate our natural treasures and accept our agency to protect their existence.
