Project House: The House Next Door

The House Next Door
The Terrace House is the perfect example of performing domestic responsibilities and rights on a smaller scale. As a home, it gives equal importance to eating, sleeping, bathing and relaxing. However, due to its limited space, less importance is given to sharing the space with guests and neighbours . Ultimately, the Australian terrace house does not allow for the activity that Australians do best - entertaining and sharing space with the community around us.

As seen in many communities, the community garden is an effective tool used to bring neighbours together as well as to grow produce for those to share. The community garden is a place for society to flourish and grow with values being shared between each member.  Through the re-design of the terrace house, the tenants that reside other time will exemplify sharing the house with their surrounding neighbours more than dwelling in it themselves. Through creating open spaces and increasing the natural light that pours through the house, the central aspect will be creating spaces for gardens to flourish. The backyard, second floor balcony and extended atrium will be dedicated to garden space with the inclusion of a communal kitchen and bathrooms for community members to share.  Bedrooms and private spaces will be limited or hidden to maximise spaces given intentionally and only for sharing with neighbours.
