Question: Where do most car accidents occur in Wisconsin?
To answer, a simple Python script is needed to scrape the Wisconsin 511 website for the accident data. The following attributes were pulled out of the XML to be appended to a CSV: Latitude and Longitude to map the incidents, ID to filter out duplicates, and Event Type to select only accidents and not construction. The script was set up to run every 5 minutes throughout the month of September.
At the end of the month the CSV is loaded into QGIS to view the results (~3700 accidents). At a small scale the results are unsurprising. More populated areas are hotter (Milwaukee and Madison) with a focus on Interstates and Highways.
However at a larger scale certain locations can be identified using hotspot analysis, some that you may want to pay extra attention to as you drive through them.
Drive safe!
