Hansel and Gretel

For this project I decided to portray the story of Hansel and Gretel. To start this piece I began with a photo of a candy house. I wanted to make the house pop more and seem more magical so I decided to add glitter to the inside of the house and other components. I put a photo of glitter behind the house and used a layer mask to reveal the parts of the house I wanted to have glitter.
Next I worked on adding the outline. My idea for this project was to have a fun intriging candy house and then add a black outline with vines growing to represent the more ominous side of this children's story.
After drawing the outline of the house with a black brush tool, I began adding in the vines. To do this I put the vine image on top of the outline then erased parts of the vine to make it appear as is if was wrapping around the outline.
Next I began working on the background. I used animage of a light fun forest and an image of a dark scary forest and used the layer mask tool and a low opacity brush to blend them together. I did this to further represent the idea of the fun and intriguing house turning into something very scary.
I then began working on the environment of the piece. I used the adjustments tool to add shadows and play with the amount of light being shown on the house. Next I used a fog brush tool to add white and green fog around the house.
For this piece my idea was to have candy exploding out of the girls head and having witch hands stealing the candy. To create the head opening I doubled the image of the girl. I layer masked everything but the top of her head on one layer and layer masked on the top on the other layer. I then used the transform tool to tilt it. I also used the brush tool it add the shadow of the empty head.
Here I began adding in a lot of different candies.
Here I began adding in the witch's hands and using the transform tool to position them in the way I wanted.
For the background I used a fog brush to add green, white, and black fog around the witch hands and then fun happy colors around the little girl.
To begin this project I started with a picture of my siblings and I running down a hill. I used a layer mask to cut out my brother and sister.
Here I used the liquify tool to create a cool rainbow overlay for the grass to make it seem more magical.
Next I imported an image of a lady holding her back and a witches hat. I used a layer mask to cut out the lady's hands so it would appear she was holding the hat behind her back. The idea behind the piece is that the "witch" would be inticing the kids running towards her with candy and they would have no idea she was an evil witch just like in Hansel and Gretel.
Here I added the background of magical hills and put the rainbow overlay on top of it. I also added sparkles in with a brush tool.
I first added the candy all around the lady. I also added colorful sparkles around the kids to make them look more enchanted. I also used the adjustments tool to add more light on the kids and less on the witch and the hat. Finally I moved the kids over and cropped the canvas in order to better balance the piece.
