How The Arnold P. Gold Foundation Inspires Humanistic

Samuel Bride, MD of New York, NY studied medicine at Boston University School of Medicine before serving a general surgery residency. Dr. Samuel Bride continued practicing medicine in the US and earned the Gold Humanism Honor Society award in 2009 from The Arnold P. Gold Foundation.

In 1988, Dr. Arnold Gold, a pediatric neurologist, and his wife Dr. Sarah Gold, who had a master of education, formed The Arnold P. Gold Foundation to instill empathy, compassion, and respect into the practice of healthcare. The two originated the foundation in coordination with their colleagues at Columbia University in New York, New York in response to the tendency toward an over-dependence on technology in healthcare and a weakening focus on humanism in patient care.

The Gold Humanism Honor Society developed in 2002 thanks to generous donors. Medical schools and residency programs now host over 160 chapters. The over 35,000 medical students who belong act as role models to their peers in how to provide a humanistic approach to healthcare.
