The article covers the recent partnership between NBCUniversal and PointsBet, an Australian-based sports betting company, which aims to help PointsBet expand operations in the United States. The company currently has a presence in Indiana, Iowa, and New Jersey, with plans to launch in Illinois, Michigan, and Colorado. NBCUniversal seeks to bolster PointsBet's efforts by granting it access to approximately 2,200 of its live sporting events programs, from the PGA Tour to NFL games.

As a result of the deal, NBCUniversal receives a 4.9 percent stake in the sports betting company. It also gains options for shares totaling $105 million, which will become obtainable after five years.

At the time of the article's publication, it was legal to gamble on sports in 18 U.S. states. The U.S. Supreme Court lifted a ban on sports gambling in 2018.
