MOVING TOWARDS A CIRCULAR UNIVERSITY
Countries have turned a blind eye to the consequences of hidden emissions and pollution they create. Our current economic system is reliant on a take-make-dispose model, or as well described as “the linear economy” which does not account for the Earth´s resources and neither for its people. The fact is that almost 50% of global emissions are produced by the wealthiest which constitutes 10% of the world´s population. The most fortunate (20%) then, are responsible for 70% of those emissions. It is a necessity for the planet to shift towards the Circular Economy. Circular economy is ultimately a new way to design, make and use things within planetary boundaries. The main aim is to reuse our resources as much as possible resulting in sending nothing to landfill.

Currently universities have the opportunity to become leaders and examples of these good practices. Students are claiming for more accessible sustainable education and for their institution to be an example to follow. It has been researched that the positive outcome universities could have if they invest time into research, implementation and education of the circular economy. University campuses are perfect test-subjects for working towards the circular economy.

Moving Towards a Circular University is a social responsible design with the aims of enhancing a lacking conversation about sustainable practices. The design will consist of an online platform where users can easily locate accessible information about the global context, such as: sustainable practices, local events and forums offering inspiration on their circular journey.

The target audience of this design are university students, aged between 18 years-old to 28 years-old, female and male, lower income and interested in the environment but lack the energy and resources to change their behavior.
