In this assignment, I created 3 pieces based on a mad-Lib illustrating a theme of broken things. My Art-lib was as follows:
I am going to create 3 narrative (movement/type/description of art) works of design/art using photoshop (medium) on a computer (medium).  One piece is going to have flying  (verb) butterflies (noun) using a lightbulb (technology)  in/on a/the books (noun). While another is going to have a hand (noun) bursting out (verb) bubble rap (noun) in water(noun). My last piece is going to feature a dancing (adjective) ice skater (noun) skating (verb) ice (noun) on a broken mirror (noun).

In my first piece, I illustrated a broken lightbulb in a library scenery with butterflies escaping.
Starting off with the background, I created brushes of books and pages using a pen tool. I inserted the book brush randomly in the background in order to create a library scenery. Then, using the inverse page brush, I scattered the pages on top of the layer with the books. To blend the two layers, I used the difference filter which made the pages white with a blue tent. Because I really wanted to incorporate complimentary colors in this assignment, I used blue and orange to illustrate this piece.  Next I made a broken lightbulb brush and placed it in the corner of this piece.

First, I took the white broken lightbulb brush and use it for the top layer of the lightbulb. Then I took the black inverse brush of the broken lightbulb to enhance the details within the lightbulb.  After that, I took the broken lightbulb brush and drew orange around the exterior of the white lightbulb to create a shining effect. In order to enhance the contrast of light and dark values within the lightbulb, I blended these layers together with the vivid light filter which emphasized the light values against the dark values.
Then, to illustrate the butterfly escaping the broken lightbulb, I created butterfly brushes using the quick selection. I drew the orange and blue butterflies randomly around the inside and outside by rotation them and changing the size. To create dimension, I drew butterflies with a lower opacity around the inside of the lightbulb. Also, I emphasized movement by drawing a butterfly right behind each of the larger butterflies, which made it look like they were flying forward. This was the final piece:

For my second piece, I illustrated a hand bursting out of water through bubble wrap.

Starting off with the background, I created a blue bubble wrap brush and placed it in the back. Then, I made a splashing water brush and placed the layer in front of bubble wrap; I made a layer mask and erased with a low opacity where the inside of the bubble would be. I then used a layer mask on the bubble wrap layer to erase the part where the hand would break through. To make it look like the water is inside the bubble, I blended the water splashing layer with the bubble wrap layer using the exclusion filter. Then I wanted to make sure I incorporated the different values that were reflection on the plastic of the bubble wrap so I lightly erased the water in the highlight areas and rounded it by erasing water on the outskirts around the bubble.

Next, to show the bubble is bursting, I took a broken paper picture and made a brush using the pin tool. I distorted it too create the 3D effect.  Then I placed the hand in water inside the bubble wrap and I made it orange to incorporate the complimentary colors and to make it stand out. Then I took water brushes that I downloaded and covered the wrist part of the arm with the splashing water to blend it in with the scenery. Then to make the hand look more real and not like a brush, I erased the lines that were showing behind the hand. To emphasis the movement of the hand, I drew another hand behind and slightly higher than the one in front of it which depicts that the hand is reaching out of the water and through the bubble wrap.
This is my final piece:

For my final piece, I depicted an ice skater skating on a broken mirror in Central Park.

I started this piece by getting the cut outs of the photos before making the brushes. I cut out the ice skater and the mirror using the pin tool. Then, I took a photo of broken glass and placed the layer in front of the mirror layer. For the background, I used a photo of the view in Central Park and to emphasis perspective, I rounded out the bottom edges by warping it, and then I distorted it.
Then, I made the brushes out of photos in the set up and I used the complimentary colors, orange and blue, for the skater and the broken mirror. This I took the broken glass brush and made a layer in front of the mirror layer and I blended them, using the Vivid light filter. This put an emphasis on the contrast of light and dark values within the breakage of the glass. To enhance to winter scenery, I made tree brushes and added them around the mirror. I stressed the idea of perception by making the trees that are farther away and the trees that are closer lighter.
Then, I took the ice skater brush and I placed a skater slightly behind the original one which put an emphasis on the movement of the skater. To make the piece look more realistic, I took the ice skater brush and reflected it and flipped it and placed it inversely to the tip of the blade on the shoe. I then blended it by using the Difference filter, which made it look like it was a reflection. Lastly, I wanted to enhance the winter scenery, so I downloaded a snow brush and dispersed it around the background. My final piece is as follows:
