Fred came to life from a design exercise to make a cardboard chair for a child. As a group, we focused on three main aspects when creating Fred: playability, utility and transport. You can play with Fred in different ways, you can ride him, you can add or remove accessories, make your own unique friend. Fred can also be used a rocking chair or turned upside down as stable stool; his inner space is accessible to store his many different accessories or other things. We designed Fred as a modular system for easy assembly and disassembly, this makes him very transportable, not just from manufacturer to retailer to home, but also from home to home should the owner need it. He can be many different colors but that was not allowed in this exercise.
Our goal for the assembly guide was to create an universal set of instructions that did not rely on
words, this way it could be understood by any person no matter what language they speak.
