Waging War Without the Violence

"Reenactment stands for performing a role in an event that occurred at an earlier time."

This series documents young Finnish men in their very exceptional hobby.

During the weekends these individuals love to dress up in authentic uniforms with realistic accessories, and head out into the woods. There their goal is to try and experience something that the past generations felt during the Second World War and other conflicts. One of these feelings is the warmth of brothers-in-arms sharing the uniform.

What I noticed while working on this project was that suffering from cold weather, dirt everywhere or even from high amounts of burden were all sources of enjoyment. Thanks to a safe environment, it became a place of escapism, meditation and of course sharing a common interest.

The series was photographed in Finland between 2007-2010.
