Critical Objects: A study of art and the everyday, 2018
Photobook, laser prints on newsprint paper

In the age of Postmodernism, the notion of originality and authenticity is of high concern within the art world. Postmodern artworks often question and challenge the idea of copyright infringement, with artists pushing the boundaries and initiating conversations of appropriation. A Postmodern work also distinctively collapses the boundaries between high culture and mass or popular culture, amalgamating art and everyday life.

The project Critical Objects deals with these ideas of the Postmodern through its engagement between the high culture of fine art paintings and the mass culture of packaged supermarket food. Through a series of photographic representations, this project accesses the archive of fine art paintings and re-appropriates it in a way in which we do not normally interact with them.

The unexpected juxtaposition between the archival paintings and the mundane objects merge high and low culture, blurring the distinction between the two opposing disciplinary while challenging the definition of art and photography. Through this amalgamation, the photographic still life is created and examined in a new means, allowing the viewers to view and interact with the now altered fine art painting in a way that they never would in its original context. This further maintains conversations surrounding reproduction and originality, as well as our everyday life, culture and the way we access the archive today.
