Project One
For our first project, our objective was to create four examples to demonstrate the four principles of design: asymmetric balance, emphasis, scale, and rhythm. Through different readings and examples we learned the various aspects of each principle in order to create these illustrations (all 5.5 x 5.5)- done by hand with a variety of physical materials.

Asymmetric balance is the way visuals are arranged to provide a sense of balance or in-balance that carries the visual weight of the piece. To bring this to life, I used black and white paper, making shapes of hearts then cutting them in half for both sides.

Scale relates to the size and proportion of something. Scale is uses many different aspects to illustrate the purpose and meaning of a piece. For this, I printed out the M's as white on a black background, cutting them very close to the edges where they connect to make them blend then glued them onto a black background.

Rhythm is like it is used in music to create a pattern of sorts for our mind to understand. It is based on the repetition of visuals with perfect or dynamic patterns. I simply used a pencil to sketch it then went over it with a sharpie.

Emphasis is a focal point or emphasized element of a piece that can attract attention- that can be displayed in different ways. For this, I used a ceramic heart I had in my home, then wrapped it in white paper and scanned it on my copier with black paper to create the background.
