"BRUNCHING NEGROS" 2020
"BRUNCHING NEGROS" is a series based on tidbit in Dulcé Sloan's standup where she described herself as a 'brunching negro' and a 'mimosa n*****'. The terms really stuck with me. As an artist, I think it's important to portray all forms of Blackness, whether it be mundane or divine. This series leans into the 'mundane'. Black people simply eating together.
The first illustration is inspired my ' lounge' culture. I pulled for heavily from 60's aesthetics, illustration, and design trends.
The second illustration pulls from 'americana'. My main inspiration came from Normal Rockwell.
the third illustration was contemporary. Isometric illustrations / corporate memphis is a popular form of illustration at the moment. So to portray modern people I decided to use the isometric angle with corporate memphis rendering. The color pink is used as a motif to connect all three illustrations.
THANK YOU!
