The Jimmie Hale Mission’s Active Recovery Program

While based in Birmingham, Alabama, John Vawter is the principal for Capstone Collegiate Communities which has developed student housing across the country including Austen, Fairfax, and Fort Collins. In addition to his work at Capstone, John Vawter was a board member for Jimmy Hale Mission for five years.

Founded in 1944, the Jimmie Hale Mission is a Christian nonprofit that provides support and resources for the homeless in the community of Birmingham. Because of the high rates of substance abuse among those who are homeless, the Jimmie Hale Mission focuses on providing outreach and support to those suffering. The Active Recovery Program is a thirteen to fifteen-week program offered at no charge and includes being part of a supportive group.

In addition, those who are part of the program have individual time with professional counselors. Focusing on six principals, the Active Recovery Program works to educate participants about substance abuse, and how addiction works. As well, the program helps participants find meaningful growth through emotional maturity and creating a life plan.
