1:1 Scale Model - Young Dusky Leaf Monkey

1:1 Scale Model of a Young Dusky Leaf Monkey (2020)
This is a 1:1 Scaled Model of a Young Dusky Leaf Monkey. This was a project of which I learn alot from, especially since due to the Coronavirus Lockdown as I couldn't be at University, I created him at home.
This is my final second year model for University.

Materials: Silicone, Bathroom Sealant Silicone, Plaster, Fake fur, Glass Beads, Plastiline, Wet Clay, Wire (for armature), Wax Polish, Oil Paint

Processes: Sculpting, Moulding, Casting, Hair Punching
Above: Some images from the sculpting process
Above shows the process of creating the mould for the cast. This is a two part mould made of plaster. I used a wax polish on the first part before I poured the second half of the mould to create a barrier between the two so that the mould could be separated easily.
As I didn't have the ability to get a hold of silicone paints due to lockdown, I had to come up with a more inventive way of creating the markings on the monkey. Not having some silicone paint does limit the amount of detail I could achieve in the face, and paint would have allowed me to create more depth in the face. However, to get the main markings  I used bathroom silicone sealant and oil paint mixed together and paint directly into the mould for the eye markings. The lips I used platinum silicone and dyed it allowing both of these marking to set before pouring in the main colour.

Essentially I build the face up in layers, if I had more time to experiment I would have tried doing more face layers to build up more detail in the face.
Once the silicone has set in the mould, I could remove the cast and clean it up. I needed to clean up the seams, and fix the eye markings, of which could be done by applying some more of the sealant and oil paint mixture.
Hair Punching was the final stage of the process, and due to the age of the monkey I was making, the fur is at a stage from when it transitions between its newborn colours and its adult colouration, so I worked with the two colours I had available that matched the monkeys' colouration and hair punched them with each other, until the final outcome was achieved.

Just a little haircut after and he is complete!
