The Art of Miniature

Miniatures have been an uprising form of art. It can be in various types –– food, locations, furniture or buildings. Dioramas are 3-Dimensional models that represent a scene and are one of the commonly made miniatures.

Edz Camila (as seen from the photo above), also recognised as @singaporeminiature from Instagram, does fine scale modelling as a hobby. She started her interest when a friend saw her passion for the arts and introduced it to her. From there, she started to commit some of her time learning more about the different techniques used through reading books, DVDs and even from experienced fine scale artists.

Besides the equipments and materials she gets from art shops or friends, she also makes her own diorama parts by the processes called moulding and casting. She makes moulds out of the diorama pieces that she has and uses resin for casting.

Camila also shares other interests such as oil painting and watercolour. She mentioned how she would also try various kinds of arts like gardening, cooking or anything under the sun. Aside from that, she helps design tattoos for a friend who owns a tattoo shop and designed her personal tattoos too (as seen from the photo above).

During the process of modelling, the placement of each figure has to be well thought of for it to be placed in a way that it tells a story. Moreover, every small detail plays a significant part in the diorama like the colour used to paint it or even the angle placements. Some of the dioramas are based on the 1960s to 1970s and creates a bigger piece when combined altogether.

She shares how she does her own personalised dioramas as well, especially if it's a moment worth remembering (one of it seen from the photo above on her late father riding the motorcycle.)

People would approach her for customised dioramas or even ask to use some of her work for film shootings. Hence, she makes profit out of her hobby of fine scale modelling. She has also made friends locally and globally since she started. They would often share one another's creations (just like the personalised orange, rusty-looking jeep seen from the photo below that was given by a supportive friend.)

After the visit to her studio and getting to learn more about her passion for miniatures, I realised the great lengths she commits to really do what she loves doing and the creativity that she pushes for. Her journey to how she got where she is now truly shows how much a person could succeed as long as you continuously work on it.
