The Oswegatchie Republic

Flag concept for the Long Pond Road area of Belfort (Lewis County) New York.

Belfort (once known as "the City of the Future") is a small population-designated area about 10 miles northeast of Croghan, in Lewis County, New York. Long Pond Road runs from Belfort eastward until it ends past Camp Oswegatchie (FFA) at the Watson East Triangle area of the Adirondacks in the far eastern edge of the Town of Croghan, where it meets the Town of Webb in Herkimer County. Along the Road are Sweet's Mill Bridge, Buckhorn Bridge, Long Pond, Mud Pond and French Pond, ending with Trout Falls and the Keck Trail.

Croghan is known for Croghan Balogna, maple products, fall foliage, farming and delicious baked goods and other products made locally by the large Mennonite population.

Loons are plentiful in this area and their cries can be heard for miles. Spotting a loon, or a family of loons, while kayaking on a river, is a rare treat.

The black represents the Oswegatchie River, which means "black water" according to Onondaga tradition.

The blue represents the "blue line." The area that defines the Adirondacks was originally drawn in blue ink and being inside "the blue line" means within the confines of the ADK Park in Upstate New York.

The gold represents the autumnal change of foliage, the most spectacular time in the Adirondacks.
