I'm amazed by how fascinating Jia Tolentino's writing from her book "Trick Mirror: Reflection of Self Delusion" that I decided to illustrate one of the essays. It was a hard choose because all of the essays have a very interesting story and message to illustrate. I picked "Pure Heroine" because the topics in this essay are women's literature and it's a fun thing to illustrate.

I choose to illustrate the opening part based on scene from the story in the early part of the essay, when Jia sits on the floor with her friend playing Power Rangers toys. I add some objects that suited the overall tone of women empowerment of the story like framed popular Cher's quote "Mom, I Am A Rich Man" and Taylor Swift 1989 Album as her title as the artist of the decade. The Russian Doll on the shelf also assembled the stages of heroine Jia put in this essay.
The illustration of each stage of heroine I create based on the one of the literature examples Lia write down on the essay. I choose Little Women for childhood heroine, The Bell Jar for the adolescence heroine, and The Awakening for adulthood heroine.

As the closing of the illustration, I choose to put the earlier scene, but in the lamp-turned-off scene as essence of closing of the story.  I put light emerge through the door and hits the Power Rangers Pink as symbolized Jia's critic on lack of diversity in women's literature and how it effected the reader.
