Science Museum in Macka, Istanbul

Surrounded by Macka Park from three sides, this site offers itself as a challenging location for a project that is meant to be a new landmark, a public destination and a cultural hub. The main approach is to embed the building within the topography as not to interrupt the park’s greenery, yet linking it to the street. What was previously a parking space is now a part of the park acting as an entrance to the museum. The building can be entered either directly from the park or the street, both entrances lead into the same entrance hall but on different levels.

The space is designed to have museum visits start from the street entrance (0.00) and end there as well, a cafe takes place at the park entrance (+5.00) which is linked directly to the street entrance below. A continuous void provided by galleries overlooking the lower levels establishes a visual connection and offers the visitor a preview of what’s coming. The visit finishes at (-4.00) where two temporary exhibition halls are located near the entrance above. A gift shop is to be found when the tour ends right beneath the cafe.
