This is an adjustable table lamp that can change light dispersion to accommodate different tasks.
The goals of the project were to create a modern lamp, versatile and comfortable to interact with. The lamp can be extended to desired height and the dispersion of light the lamp creates can be changed – all of these tasks along with turning it on/off can be accomplished in one motion with only one hand.
A simple 3d model helped to visualize the object and to experiment with it.
The key element to the design is how simple it is to interact with the lamp. The lamp can be rotated and extended with one hand, holding the lamp by the cylinder lampshade. The activation button is easily within reach, on the right side of the cylinder.
Different tasks require different light – some need more focused light and others more dispersed. The transparent part of the lamp is divided into three segments: one segment is perfectly clear, the other two are made matte (one less translucent than the other). By rotating the cylinder you choose which segment to place in front of the light, so more or less light is let through.
The lamp is made mainly of brass. Some parts are fabricated by bending brass tubing into shape and others are made by press stamping. The components are held together by brass rings with set screws in them – this method permits fine adjustments to the assembly to be made easily by the user.
The lamp is fixed tightly to a tabletop with a screw in the base.
While the lamp head moves lower the cable inside the lamp gets shorter. To avoid possible danger of creating a loose loop of cable on the floor, the cable is driven through two holes in the bottom part of the lamp. This way the loop forms near the lamp and there is no risk of tripping over it.
Thanks for your time! Have a nice day!
